Reader Story:

My dogs name is Meeko and he is the most handsome pug you will ever see. I got him for my eighteenth birthday and he has been a huge part of my life ever since; he even took part in my senior pictures as well as my wedding pictures.

Needless to say he has pretty much been the king of our household. Unfortunately, he has been really sick for the past couple of months and his normal vet does not seem to know what the problem may be. We have tried a special diet food and medication, but he does not seem to be getting any better. Tomorrow I will be bringing him to a different vet to get a second opinion and hopefully they will be able to tell us what is wrong. He is going to be nine years old this year which is considered a senior citizen, but I really hope that we are able to keep him around for a little while longer!

Positive dog training is proven to be the most effective form of training. Positive reinforcement of a behavior coupled with the ignoring of bad or incorrect behavior is scientifically proven to be the best form of training.

Say you would like the dog to sit. You can say “sit”, point to the ground, or even push the dog into the ground all day and chances are the dog is not going to understand. On the contrary, the dog is probably going to get bored and you are going to get upset with the dog for not understanding. Dogs do not understand human language, though many people think they do. You cannot give a dog a command and expect them to understand without any training. Think back to when you were being taught something. Which was more effective? When you were forced and/or muscled into obedience or when you were enticed with a reward?

For most people and dogs positive reinforcement is the better way to train and it encourages the retention of the information or behavior.

Reader Story:

We had an Alsatian dog called Rover. He was very sweet. He used to behave more like a human being rather than a dog and he was treated like a family member in our family. My mother would say that he was like her son and he was very attached to her. He would sleep with her only in her bed room in the AC room.

He used to like fried papads a lot and would go and stand in the kitchen entrance and wait for my mom to give him the first fired papad. He would enjoy playing with my brother with his ball. He was such a lovely creature to us and was terror to the neighbourhood. He guarded not only our house but the opposite house also because he will bark if someone comes and stands in their gate also. He will go catch frogs live during rainy seasons and bring them in his mouth to and drop them before us to see.

The most funny thing in him is that he would go to the garden tap open it up and drink water to his content and then he would leave it open and come off and my mother will go wild with him for that only and when she scolds him should see how very humble he would sit and hear what all she says like a naughty boy caught for doing mischief.

One more of his favourite item to eat would be chocolates and if he hears the minute sound of opening a chocolate cover he would become excited and jump up here and there until he gets it and relishes eating it. He was such a sweetheart. We all miss him a lot since he is no more now and passed away last year.

Crate training can be a positive experience for your puppy and you if approached correctly. Crates help provide a secure “den-like” environment for your dog while training them to reduce their anxiety during times that their family is away.

First and foremost, make sure that the crate you purchase for your dog is the correct size. If the crate is too big, your puppy may go to the bathroom in the crate. If the crate is too small, your pet will feel cramped. Your dog should have enough room to lay down and turn around but not any room beyond that. Your local pet store should have an employee that can help you find a crate based on your dog’s weight.

Second of all, imagine the crate is your bed. You want the crate to be enjoyable for your dog to be in. Place pillows or blankets inside and maybe a toy or two. The crate should not serve as a place of punishment. You want the crate to become your dog’s home. When you are first beginning to crate train your dog, set it up in a location that your family frequently traffics. Leave the door open with some treats inside. Allow your dog to explore the crate freely. Be sure to use whatever phrase you want your dog to respond to anytime the puppy enters the crate (i.e. crate, box, etc.) Anytime your dog enters the crate, be sure to give alot of praise.

After your dog has had ample time to explore the crate on his or her own, close the door with the dog inside. Praise the puppy while he or she is in the crate. When you open the door ignore your dog for several moments. Do this for several days to help your puppy associate being in the crate with praise and treats. After awhile, shut the door to the crate. Give praise and treats and leave the room. After several minutes return. Remember to ignore your puppy. Open the crate once your dog has calmed down and/or ceased barking.

Above all, remember that your puppy can only be expected to hold its bladder for one hour for every month of age up to nine hours. Do not leave your puppy in the crate any longer than that. Good luck.If you are successful, your puppy will often go to his or her crate on their own when they want to lay down.

My dog is a small, Reindeer Chihuahua/terrier. She is about five years old, and is predominantly white with brown spots. Though she was originally named “saddles” for a large brown patch of fur located on her back, we have come to know her as ‘Peaches’, short for ‘Peaches the Dog’. Peaches is a rather energetic dog, which should not be surprising given her descent.

She enjoys running around the yard for exercise and playing hide-and-go-seek quite commonly. She has a curious nature about her and frequently tries to dig under the fence and escape into the great beyond. Luckily, she has always returned home, though she will almost surely make a bolt for an exit if she knows she will get away, if only for a few minutes.

Peaches enjoys eating any type of meat that we give her, and though we originally trained her to only eat dog food, we cannot help but offer her table scraps when she comes begging. All in all, Peaches is a kind, loving and affectionate dog who I see not only as a beloved pet, but also as an adored family friend.

Reader Story:

My special 4 legged friend is a Bedlington Terrier named Kate. She is 3 years old and has been a wonderful addition to our family. One of the best parts of Kate’s day is when my daughter comes home from school. Some how she knows when it is time for the bus to come and starts getting very excited. I usually let her out of the house as the bus is coming to a stop and she literally flies through the front yard to get to Lindsey.

Kate also knows if you are having a bad day and will do whatever she can to improve that day, whether it is just sitting in your lap, or getting a toy to play with. She has a stuffed snail toy that is her favorite right now and she will throw it at you until you start playing with her. Kate also likes to compete in agility. People love watching her because her tail never stops wagging when she is running through the course. One person commented that they didn’t know how she stayed on the dog walk when her tail was wagging that hard. Kate is a joy to have as a member of the family, and I can’t imagine life without her.

New puppies are great! But sometimes puppy house training is not! What do you do when that cute little fur ball you fell in love with decides to pee on your carpet after he has just spent twenty minutes outside?

I would suggest you take a deep breath while you reach for the carpet cleaner and then try a couple of these ideas.

1. When you take your puppy out try to take him to the same place each time. Once he smells a spot where he has relieved himself in the past, usually he will go again.

2. Always take him out right when he wakes up, and immediately after he eats or drinks.

3. Start using a code word. When he goes potty outside tell him he is a good boy and that he is doing a good job. I like to say, “good potty, goodboy.” After a few times telling him he is doing a good job you can start asking him to go potty when you take him out.

4. Try making him wear a belly band while he is inside. That way if he does urinate inside the belly band will soak up the majority of it. With diligence on your part and continous training your puppy should learn that his bathroom is outside.

When I was small, my dad told me that I could go to the shelter and pick out our new family dog. I was so excited to look through all the cute puppies! The day before our trip to the local pound, my neighbor brought over a tiny puppy that he found in the wooded area behind his house.

As children are, I was upset that a dog wandered into our yard, robbing me of my trip to the shelter. Well, I got over it. Dudley turned out to be the best dog our family has ever cared for. Even now that I no longer live at home, Dudley greets me with a big smile and a wagging tail when I return.

I also couldn’t have chosen a better dog for my father: they both love to fish, go for walks around the neighborhood and chill out at the family barbeques.

Patience and consistency are the keys to training a puppy. Puppies have the activity level of a human toddler with none of the language recognition. They do not know what “sit” means and they do not understand “get off the couch”. Puppies need constant and consistent training. I recommend a group training class as soon as your puppy is old enough for many reasons.

One, it allows the puppy to be socialized. Puppies that do not get socialized young often turn out to be aggressive and overprotective. Two, being coupled with a professional trainer will give you someone for life that understands you and your dog and can answer questions that may arise as the puppy grows. Three, a group setting gives you incentive to actually do the training. Training is not a one time event. It takes many repetitions over the course of many weeks. If you are in a class, you have the incentive to work with you dog so you do not get embarrassed when your dog performs badly the next class. Remember, dogs may learn at a different pace than you expect. It takes a patient and consistent owner to train a puppy well.

Dogs are known for ‘wolfing’ down their food but I have a dog who takes a different approach. I have two young Boxers, Achilles and Artemis. Achilles enjoys savoring his food. Artemis is my little piggy. Her motto in life seems to be, “I’ll figure out if it’s edible after it’s safely in my mouth.”

Achilles likes to be offered a treat. He’ll sniff it and think about it. He often looks around to make sure Artemis is close before he’ll even take the treat. Treats must taste better when someone else wants it. He’ll carry the treat to the carpet and then drop it and wait. Artemis gets her treat and already has it gobbled down before Achilles has laid down. Only after he is sure she is watching him will he taste the treat again. He can take five minutes enjoying something she swallowed in three seconds.

Consistency is the most critical part of dog training. A dog must realize that they have to obey your command every time it is given. If you do not enforce the rules, the dog will know that it can get away without obeying. Of course you can do this with positive enforcement and you should never yell at your dog or hit your dog. All this will do is ruin your relationship with your dog.

Practice with your dog several times a day in short session to keep its mind active. And again, remember that the human is the pack leader, not the dog. The dog can sense any weakness and will not follow commands if you’re not confident and in charge.

Reader Story:

It has been some time since our last dog past away, so we wanted to get another one for our 8 year old son to play with. We were searching online for a few weeks looking for the perfect dog for our family. Finally one seemed liked the best match – a male dog that was fixed, had his shots, and at least 2 years old.

After travelling an hour and a half and paying a rehoming fee, we acquired a beagle that is 5 years old. Unfortunately, the previous owners provided us the only a piece of paper with the shelter they got him from and were going to send us the other paperwork. I called the shelter right away to find out about shot records and seeing if the dog is fixed. They didn’t do any of that!

Needless to say, we went home with the dog and got him his shots. (Petco offers reduced shots at participating stores). The little guy is pretty good. He is not affectionate, but is getting there. He doesn’t jump on us, try to lick us, nor want to sleep on the bed. He will wag his tail non-stop until he gets a treat. He has only barked a handful of times!

He has no clue as to playing catch or going after a ball. He does know how to get bagels off the table and hide them for future snacks though. Slowly but surely he’s coming around. I am determined to get him to be part of the family and teach him to have fun. So far, he can walk backwards on his hind legs while waiting for a treat!

We as humans generally eat too much. This is why the media is always saying how unhealthy we are. Putting on a little weight for a human is one thing, but for a dog it can be deadly. Start a dog early on a strict feeding schedule and you will have less problems as the dog matures.

Most experts recommend that once a puppy is weaned from milk and eating solid food, they should be fed twice to three times a day (once in the morning and once at night). Once a day feedings cause the metabolism to shut down and frequent or free feeding can cause overeating habits. Most dog foods bags have a recommended feeding chart based on weight and age. This should be followed closely unless something else is recommended by the vet.

This chart shows how much a dog should eat daily, for example, if the chart shows your dog needs a cup of food a day, you should feed ½ cup in the morning and ½ cup at night. Failure to put your dog on a good food and a strict schedule can lead to obesity, hip or back problems, heart problems, and premature death. All of this is easily prevented by taking the time to properly feed your dog.

Reader Story:

My little grand-dogger Sophie, a Yorkshire terrier, is such a sweet companion. She is 2.5 years old, about 12 pounds, and just loves to play or take a walk. When she wants to play she will get her toy and prance in front of you until you pay attention. She loves to have you throw the toy and she will bring it back, but she doesn’t relinquish it easily. Sophie has decided that her mission in life is to control the squirrel population in the world, but she’s not too great at it yet!

When she sees a squirrel in the yard she actually “points” at it! She will sit and stare so hard that she quivers. Sophie has only treed a squirrel once, but she was so proud that she was protecting us. She has several tricks in her repertoire – she can sit, stand, roll-over, dance, and, of course, she is so cute when she begs! I call her my granddogger since grandkids are quite a few years away for me!

If you have got a new puppy, one of the first things you need to decide is how to potty train your puppy. In this society, most people work out of their home which leaves a puppy at home to fend for themselves. This makes potty training hard on a little dog that can only hold it for a few hours at a time. A solution to this is potty pads.

Most potty pads are created with a plastic backing and an enticing grass or pheromone scent that encourages the puppy to use the restroom on the pads without the mess that comes from newspaper training. To teach your puppy to use these pads is simple but it can take time. Watch your puppy closely at first. Most dogs have a “tell” for when they have to use the restroom. Some will walk in circles while others will sniff the floor intently. It may take a while but you will soon figure out when your puppy needs to use the bathroom. Until you learn your puppy’s potty habits, make it a habit of your own to take the puppy and place it on the puppy pad at least once a hour. As soon as the puppy uses the restroom on the pad, praise it and give it a treat. Repeating this over time will allow you to leave your puppy home alone without the fear of accidents.

My dog’s name is Daisy, and she is an American Eskimo/Sheltie cross. My husband and I adopted her from a rescue organization shortly before her 2nd birthday. Daisy is a great dog. She is full of life and very affectionate. She gets crazy excited whenever one of us comes home, even if we just left for a few minutes.

Daisy’s favorite toy is a stuffed pumpkin. She loves any toy that squeaks, but this is her favorite toy. She has already broken the squeaker on this toy, but it remains her favorite – she will choose it again and again over any other toy. Daisy loves to play fetch, go for walks, and go for car rides.

Daisy came to us as a remarkably well-trained dog. She was house-trained, of course, and knew the basic commands like sit, stay, lay down, and shake. She is a quick learner, and we have already taught her a few new tricks. Daisy is all together a well-behaved dog – she is trustworthy off the leash, and will not run away from us. She loves people, even more than she loves dogs it seems – she will often greet a dog’s owner before she really greets the dog. She is not, however poorly socialized – she likes to run and play with dogs who can keep up with her speed and energy level.

Training your dog can be a rough time if you don’t know where to start. First things first, love your dog. If you don’t show your animal that you care for it, he may seem uninterested in listening to you. It is also important to ‘treat’ your dog when he or she does something good. This can be with an actual dog treat, or just giving him praise, petting and saying things like, ‘you are such a good boy’. Trust me, your animal will know.

Getting your dogs agility up is a fun thing. I find that starting out with a leash works best. Try a mini jump fence first. Leading your dog with the leash and showing him how to jump over the fence will usually get him to follow. Doing small exercises like this everyday will surely get your dogs agility to new heights. Dog agility starter kits are usually a good way to go when starting out. They come with just about everything you need to train your dog. One of the most important things to do is to treat your animal like a human being. Old timer training ethics are not the way to go. Show some love, and stick with it.

Reader Story:

I have a wonderful border collie named Capella. Capella is one of the brightest stars in our sky and the name fits my dog beautifully. I have never had a dog so smart. To keep her mind active, I give her little tasks to do when she is in the house. I’ll hand her an item and tell her to go take it here or there. She loves that.

Capella is starting to get on up there in age, she’ll be 14 years old soon. This makes me very sad, but she still runs and jumps like a puppy so I try not to think about it. It seems like it was just yesterday that I was putting little booties on her feet and taking her out for a romp in the snow. Time sure flies and what a joy she has been to the whole family.

A new puppy can be a wonderful and stressful experience as you learn to adapt your schedule to accomodate your puppy’s needs and wants. Because puppies are unable to hold their bladder as long as older dogs, you may find it necessary to train the puppy to use pads as a step toward house-breaking completely.

It is important to note that a puppy can only hold their bladder one hour for every month of age they are up to nine hours. Knowing your puppy’s holding limit will help you be more aware of a bathroom schedule. Schedules are key to training and reducing accidents.

Puppy pads help provide a designated area for toileting while helping eliminate accidents scattered around your house. Training your puppy to use its pad can be accomplished in several ways. When you see your puppy attempting to squat in another area of the house, bring him or her to the puppy pad and place them on top. If he or she eliminates on the pad, be sure to give verbal praise and if possible a treat. You may find it helpful to place your puppy’s treat jar near the potty pad to help reinforce positive behaviors as quickly as possible. If your puppy in unsuccessful with going to the bathroom on the pad, do not get discouraged. Dogs can sense frustration and anger. Keep trying and eventually you will see results.

You may find it also helpful to dab a paper towel in your puppy’s urine and then dab the paper towel on the puppy pad. The scent of your own dog’s urine on the puppy pad will help provide a direction for your puppy where it is okay to go to the bathroom. As your dog sniffs around searching for a location to eliminate, he or she will be able to smell any urine or feces that remains. For this reason, be sure to clean any accidents up effectively to eliminate any smells that may confuse your dog and stunt training.

As your dog learns to use the pad as his or her toilet, be sure to use a command word such as potty or bathroom any time he or she is “going”. This will allow for an easier transition to outdoor training later on. Throughout this process remember to use verbal praise and reinforcers. Your dog will eventually correlate praise with eliminating on the pad.

Reader Story:

My dog’s name is Bandit. Bandit is a 15 month old, black Labrador, Border collie mix. His name was Ben when I got him. I changed it to Bandit because I got him from an animal rescue organization connected to a prison in Ohio. He also has black markings, which give the hint of a mask, mixed with the brown fur around his eyes.

The prisoner who trained Bandit did a great job. Unfortunately, I have spoiled him so much he has lost some of his good manners. In fact, my mother tells me “he is one spoiled woofer”. Bandit goes with me just about everywhere. I have had him to most of my friends’ houses, on picnics and, on several occasions, to my cousin’s cottage. He and I especially enjoy the times we spend at the local dog park. He gets plenty of exercise and behaves himself pretty well. It’s also interesting to catch him checking from time to time to make certain I’m still nearby.

Crate training is an efficient way to prepare a new puppy for longer stays at home, such as when you are at work. Be attentive to your puppy’s needs when it first comes home and take it out whenever it starts wandering around, and after eating or drinking. If the puppy does not relieve themselves outside, put him or her in the crate and tray again 10 or 15 minutes later until the puppy does the right thing. Then give a lot of praise so the pup knows it did something good. The puppy will then learn to go outside when he has the chance.

We own a wonderful pomeranian/west highland terrier mix named Ella. Ella was rescued from a puppy mill, as she was an accidental breeding, and therefore unwanted. She lived in a very small cage with her sister dog, and they were covered in filth and had very little room to move.

My daughter and I decided to take Ella, and our friend took her sister, now named Spazz. We took her home, and she was terrified. Scared of us, scared of the car, scared of everything. After being coaxed into a bath, we allowed her to explore her new home. Our cats, Lil Bit, Rusty, and Bandit, did not know what to make of the dog, and she was absolutely terrified of them! Within a few days, however, the four of them were fast friends, playing tag and tug of war. Ella also made herself at home in our beds and on our couches. She is a wonderful dog, and I am grateful we were given the chance to rescue her, and show her a life full of love and light!

Reader Story:

My dog is a great big, beautiful Rhodesian Ridgeback. I bought him from a breeder in another state, but he is not show quality because he has a liver colored nose. He is 106 pounds, tall, long, slender, muscular, and has eyes the same deep, warm cinnamon color as his coat. His distinguishing feature is his ridge of fur that grows against the grain running from his hindquarters to his shoulders.

He is so affectionate and loving and dedicated to our family. He doesn’t like to let me out of his sight, and follows me around the house, content to lay down in whatever room I’m in. Being around him brings out the best in me — patience, kindness, caring. He sleeps right next to me, and is actually about the same size as me. He lets my grand niece pull his toys right out of his mouth, and lets our cats eat our of his bowl!

I marvel at his senses, and make up songs and sing to him about how differently we experience the world, as we run along the shore on the beach. My husband and I joke about the fact that if push came to shove, we would rescue our wonderful dog from a buring building before anyone else. I feel like he protects me, and I must take care of him. What a joy!

There are so many reasons I love my rescue dog. Here are my top 5 reasons rescue dogs rock.

First, they are so loyal and full of love. Often they were mistreated in the past. Show them the love they deserve and you have a friend for life.

Second they come in all breeds, colors and sizes. Unfortunately all kinds of dogs can need the warmth of a loving home.

Third, they are much less expensive then the “doggie in the window”. Most times you can rescue a dog for under $50. In the stores, these same dogs can be upwards of several hundred dollars.

Fourth, they listen well. Too many of them, due to their previous mistreatment, learned the hard way to listen very well.

Lastly, rescue dogs rock because loving and giving them a home means doing a good deed. Everyone needs someone to love and be loved by. However, after what most of these dogs have been through its especially true.

Reader Story:

Oh, I love our dog so much. It’s hard to imagine life without him. He’s an unusual breed, a Canaan, pretty much like a white shepherd, and as a herding dog he’s got a strong personality and an independent streak. We’ve really tried, in the two years we’ve had him, to spend enough time and attention on him to train him, and the results have been MOSTLY good. He still gets a little hyper, and loud, with other animals encroaching on his territory, and this is the trade-off for having a herding dog.

On the other hand he’s great with people, and I’m always charmed by the way he communicates, listens, and cooperates. We put a bell on the front door for him to ring when he needs out, and this simple little trick (my wife came up with it somewhere) saves us so much trouble, and after he’s nosed the bell and looks up at me, waiting, there’s a moment of inter-species communication that never ceases to amaze me.

Dogs often have certain genetic traits that can make training easier or harder. The thing that always stays costant in the training of a puppy is gratification. Nobody enjoys hearing that they are “bad.” The more the dog loves you the more they will try to earn your praise. Dogs feed off your emotion. Negative energy can completely distraught the canine to recess in the progress.

Dogs don’t need to be hit with a newspaper or yelled at. It is there nature to be themselves. People do not realize that they are born that way. The best way to improve a puppy’s obedience is to spend “your” time. Take the time to notice little things the dog does before he evacuates. I have seen dogs who will sniff the walls, jump in the tub, and even, as odd as it sounds, stand up with his front paws on the wall. The main part of the training is on the owner. Have a time scehdule to take the dog to a specific area after he eats to use the bathroom. It is important to not feed the animal right before bed time. The most important thing is to give the praise when he does the right thing. Just remember nobody is perfect, mistakes happen, even are loving little creatures.

I found my dog, Audrey at the local city pet shelter after an exhaustive search online for that dog who was “just right”. Audrey is an English Springer Spaniel Mix who is very unique in that she does not at all bark. This of course was a pleasant surprise for me upon bringing her home from the animal shelter, originally under the impression that she was just acting timid around her new owner and surroundings.

At the time she was 9 months old, but now at the age of almost 4 she still makes no noise beyond the occassional “HUFF!” after jumping around on the couch and eventually coming to a stop. The only way to know when she’s looking for your attention is usually by means of creeping up into your lap or running circles around the floor if it’s a time sensitive matter, such as going for a walk. She is absolutely the sweetest dog I’ve owned, and based on my experience I would encourage others to seek out the quiet or timid dogs at the pound or shelter, as they may find they have their own “mute” and overly loveable pup in their hands too!

Spaying and neutering your pet is extremely important for several reasons. Although some people may view desexing your pet as inhumane, it is better for your animal in the long run. Desexing your animal helps with animal population control. Many animals do not have homes. They starve to death living on the streets. They never know the joy of love or having a family. Neutering and spaying your animal can help reduce accidental pregnancies and thus reduce the overpopulation of dogs.

Female dogs are very difficult emotionally while they are in heat. They can become irritable, moody, and clingy. This causes strain on both the dog and the family as anxiety levels rise. In addition, because female dogs bleed while they are in heat, you often have to segragate your animal from carpeted areas of the house. This also increases anxiety in your pet as they can no longer sit with members of the family. Your dog must be under strict watch while they are in heat as they will attract unwanted attention from male dogs. All of this can be easily avoided by spaying your pet.

Male dogs may hump your leg, or the furniture and become more aggressive if they are not desexed. They may also be prone to wandering off in search of females, or even peeing in the house to mark their territory.

Dogs that have not been spayed are more prone to cancers and health issues than dogs who have been desexed. While desexing your pet does not guarantee that your dog will not have health issues, it greatly reduces the risk and the potential vet bills that could accumulate in the future. Please check at your local vet or humane society for more information about spaying or neutering your animal. It is an important process for your pet to go through and it is your duty as a pet owner to schedule this for your animal.

Reader Story -

My dog is a 2 year old pit bull terrier named Perses. She is mainly black with what we call white racing spots. We call them that because of the manner in which she sprints around the yard, looking more like a blur than a dog. Her favorite snack is the leftover crusts from pizza.

We trained her by being consistent with rewarding her when she did what she was supposed to. The one really cool aspect of her training is that when she is close, she will come to my daughter when she makes little kissing noises. As far as when she is not near the standard command applies.

She loves to play frisbee and take dips in the canal by our house. She is a really great dog, however she has recently gotten into the habit of chewing on the fence and the external dryer vent. She is such a smart dog that I am positive we can train her away from this little hiccup in her overall greatness.

Overall, any pit bull gets a bad reputation for being a pit bull, but she is the most gentle and responsive dog I have ever known.

Reader Story -

My dog Ginger is a runt. At only 80 pounds, she is 5 pounds under the official weight range for Great Pyrenees females. Even as a small representative of her breed, she towers over most other dogs. With a deep, menacing bark and muscular body, Ginger is filled with natural power.

But my dog is more mouse than menace. While other dogs one-fifth her size may chase squirrels, Ginger runs away from the furry little creatures. Loud noises send her skittering behind our legs for protection. She loves to climb all 80 pounds of herself into any willing lap, curling up into a huge, cuddly ball. At night, she snuggles up with the cat, who sleeps on top of her like a massive, furry bed.

Ginger also seems to have an instinct for matching her level of play to the various abilities of her playmates. With cousin’s 3-year-old daughter, she is slow and gentle as a stuffed bunny. With the rough-and-tumble 9-year-old, she wrestles playfully without ever becoming too rough. My dog Ginger is an undersized gentle giant. And I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Reader Story -

Benji has been a part of our family for three years now, and he has been a great joy to all of us. We rescued Benji from the roadside, where he looked lost. My daughter insisted that we try to find out if someone had lost him, but after months of posters and calling animal shelters, we gave up looking and decided to keep him.

He looks exactly like the fictional dog Benji from films, which is believed to be a cross between a miniature poodle, a miniature schnauzer, and a cocker spaniel. We were admittedly not very creative in naming him, but the name stuck like glue. Just like the fictional dog, our little Benji is fearless and clever. He doesn’t like bath time, but when he’s properly clipped and shampooed he’s quite charming. His favorite toy is an old pumpkin Halloween bucket the kids used for years to go trick-or-treating, until Benji got his teeth into it.

He learned commands like “sit,” “stay,” and “shake” with little to no effort, leading us to believe that perhaps his previous owners had already given him some training. He has been a wonderful addition to the family, and I can’t imagine life without him.

Warm, fuzzy, sweet bundles of joy, puppies make hearts sing and bring endless smiles.

Puppies however, can be a load of work. Training a puppy can be a challenge, but it is also incredibly rewarding. Training your puppy with calm, quite, consistent care will produce an outstanding canine citizen. Consistency is key, right along with compassionate and kind treatment.

Puppies are also high energy, and have short attention spans. By providing short walks several times a day, you will be establishing some great “rules” to live by. Bringing a new puppy into your household presents some challenging issues, both for you and the puppy. It is perhaps for the first time your new puppy is separated from its mother.

I remember bringing home our new King Charles Spaniel and it was his first night away from his mother and the rest of the litter. We prepared a box with a cushion, soft blanket and kept a ticking clock nearby. We were prepared for a fitful night or two until he knew that he was in a safe, contained spot that was cosy and comfortable. We kept him close to our bed, but were firm that he sleep in his special “box” bed.

As he grew the box became a little small for him, but he seemed to find it reassuring to squeeze into the small space and feel hugged by its sides while he made a cosy nest of his blanket. Of course, you could opt to buy one of the many dog beds available that have soft and cuddly covers. Many dogs enjoy keeping a toy nearby while they sleep.

A new pup is not so different from a young child and a long night is made cosier with the familiar smells of their favorite blanket, toy and nearby human. Keeping a regular routine is also important to many dogs and once you have established what the bedtime routine is – for instance, a short walk or trip to the yard then settling in to their bed for the night – you will find that they like to stick to it.

Reward your dog for their acceptable behaviors with a kind pat and a firm goodnight. If you choose to keep them close to your own bed you are giving them a job of protecting you during the night and many dogs are suited to having a job to do. I have two very active Jack Russell terriers and they have become used to the bedtime routine of a short patrol of the backyard, then a tiny dog biscuit each and settling in to their own beds in the laundry room. Because Jack Russell’s tend to be “hyper vigilant” about their territory, having them settled into a small room where they cannot hear every noise from the backyard helps them to calm down for a peaceful night.

Housebreaking a puppy will take lots of time and patience. Be prepared for lots of accidents and frustration. Every puppy is different and will respond differently to different methods. Always remember that your puppy depends on you to learn. They are never trying to disappoint you so don’t get angry at them when they have accidents.

Before 12 weeks, puppies are not capable of controling their bathroom needs because their muscles are not developed. Before this age, the key is to avoid accidendents by taking them out very often, especially after every meal.

Always clean up thoroughly after an accident or the puppy will think the lingering smell means its ok to go there. Always reward your puppy for going to the bathroom outside and for telling you they need to go out. Praise and positive reinforcement will do wonders for housebreaking, and always remember to have patience, your puppy will learn; she only wants to make you happy.

It is important to start housetraining immediately. Dogs and puppies will learn quickly and begin a routine. It is up to you whether that routine is to pee on your favorite rug, or to run to the backdoor and bark.

A good place to start is with a crate. Crate training is the easiest form of housetraining a puppy. Under normal circumstances, a dog will not do its business where it sleeps. So be sure that the crate fits your dog comfortably. The dog should be able to have enough room to stand, turn around and lie down. Use positive reinforcement when housetraining your puppy.

Keep a puppy crated whenever you are not home and at night. When you come home, immediately remove the puppy from the crate and carry him outside. When he goes pee on the grass, congratulate the puppy with a bite-size treat and lots of affection.

You should use this method for a few months to be sure the accidents inside your home will be few to none. Good luck!

Puppy training pads are a very useful tool in housebreaking your puppy. The effectiveness of the pads is due to the ability to show your dog exactly what you expect from them. They smell the urine scent on the pads, and because they instinctively tend to urinate in places where they smell urine, understand that this is an appropriate place to urinate. This appeals to the puppy’s natural instinct to urinate in a safe place.

Do not make the mistake of placing puppy training pads in an area where you do not want the dog to urinate. Many people keep a new puppy contained in a kitchen, laundry room or other place with an easy to clean floor, but you will essentially be training the puppy to urinate in that area. Worse yet is placing the pad in a puppy’s kennel, as dogs instinctively keep their immediate area free of urine.

Place the pad where you will want the puppy to urinate long term, and repeatedly bring the puppy to the area and gently show them where you want them to go. When the dog does go in the appropriate area, praise the dog immediately. This may take several repetitions, but soon your puppy will understand where they are to urinate.

Housebreaking a new puppy can be a difficult and time consuming task, but it is well worth the effort to have a well mannered dog that can be trusted in the house. It is important to understand how your dog’s digestion system is timed. Puppies usually need to “go” about half an hour after eating or drinking. Monitor the time that the dog eats, and half an hour after begin bringing the dog to where you want it to defecate.

If you are able to catch the dog going in the appropriate area, praise them lavishly with a simple repeatable phrase, such as “good dog, go potty!” If you are unable to catch the dog, and they relieve themselves in an inappropriate area, move the offending material to the appropriate place and gently show the dog, again using the positive phrase. Do not scold the dog, or rub their face in their waste, as the dog will not understand your intentions. Scented housebreaking pads can be a useful tool to housebreak your puppy, but they are unnecessary, as a paper towel used to soak up any accidents will do the trick just as well.

Training your puppy to walk on a leash will take a few weeks. After all, they do not know exactly what you want them to do!

Remember, training a puppy takes patience, and a time commitment. The first step in leash training is to familiarize the puppy with a collar. Let your puppy wear the collar for a week before introducing the leash. Then, attach the leash. Just let the puppy drag the leash around, and become used to the idea that it is attached to him or her. Finally, pick up the leash!

Praise your puppy when he walks beside you! When he or she walks away, call the puppy back to you. Praise the puppy. DO NOT yank on the leash, or keep walking when the puppy pulls away! Be patient, give lots of praise, and keep the “leash lessons” short. After a week or two of this, your puppy should start to walk beside you. Make sure you never continue walking when the puppy pulls away.

Do not give up. The puppy will come to understand that the only way he or she gets to continue walking is when he or she is right next to you. Remember to praise and discipline your puppy, and to keep lessons short, at first. As the puppy grows up, you can take him or her on longer walks outside.

Dogs and puppies have a way of looking at their masters as if they could understand every word they say. While this behavior is endearing, it makes it difficult for the person attempting to train a dog to remember that dogs do not understand everything we say. Often, when people attempt to train dogs they will yell at a dog for not demonstrating the desired behavior, but this does nothing to teach the dog.

Dogs do best with positive reinforcement, the immediate reward of desired behavior. Yelling at a puppy that has urinated inside will do nothing to reinforce good behavior, as the dog is unable to understand that the yelling is due to what it has done. Instead, reward the dog when it does what it is expected to do. This takes a lot of work for owners in the beginning of training, as they must be vigilant in noticing and rewarding the dog when it does something well, such as pottying outside, but it benefits both the dog and the owner by creating a dog that is aware of what the owner expects from them.

German Shepherds are terrific dogs, but like all dogs (and humans) need to be trained. There is nothing more annoying than an ill-mannered dog, but it doesn’t take much to insure that you have a welcome member of the family.

German Shepherds are intelligent, and somewhat dominant in nature. You have to make sure that the dog knows that you are the boss. An easy way to start with a puppy is to put some coins in a soda or beer can. When the puppy does something you don’t want her to do, shake the can a couple of times and say “no” in a firm voice, but do not shout. Once you are able to stop the dog from doing things you don’t want her to do, you can begin to get her to do the things you want her to do.

Always reward your dog (this can be verbal, by pets, or with a treat), never scream or yell. Socialize your dog, by bringing him or her to dog parks (as soon as she has her shots), and other places pooches are welcome.

Training Fido can be  tough, but with patience and practice your dog will behave like the angel that he or she is already. So first you need to discover the habits that are contributing to the bad behavior.

Whether it be barking, jumping up, or scratching each habit is reinforced by your behavior. After you have identified the cause of some of the bad behaviors, create a plan that allows you plenty of time and attention in correcting those behaviors. How do you correct them?

Several different ways apply including using  positive reinforcement with food or treats, clicker training and professional training. Whichever the route, weigh up the costs and consider the well being of the dog. It is important to reinforce positive behavior and never yell at your dog or hit your dog. These negative training methods will only serve to create a bad relationship between you both and your dog may have severe behavior problems in the future.

Learning to walk quietly on a leash is a vital skill for all dogs to learn. It is best to start when the dogs are puppies. Starting with an older dog isn’t impossible, but it will take much longer and require much more patience.

It is best to start with a worn out dog. Throw the ball, run around the yard, have lunch, whatever it is that makes your pup happy, do it. After you have a happy dog, get the leash and collar out. A nylon leash and collar is sufficient for all but the most seasoned trainer. NEVER  walk a dog on a choke collar. Take your puppy out somewhere that they are familiar with for your first time.

Stay calm and walk casually. If your puppy pulls, stop walking. Walking is a privilege, if the dog abuses the privilege by pulling, lunging or barking, simply stop the privilege. No hitting or yanking required. Continue on in this fashion. Reputation and consistency is the key to teaching! After you have mastered your familiar place, move to somewhere a little more exiting! Like the sidewalk or the neighbors yard, with permission of course! Be sure to save busy streets or crowded places for your capstone lessons.

Your puppy depends on you to provide guidance and direction. When you leave, especially for long periods of time, your puppy is without that guidance and this can lead to separation anxiety.

Preventing or overcoming separation anxiety is not as difficult as some believe. When you leave your dog, it is important to not act unusually. The goodbye should be unemotional and quick, as you do not want your puppy to believe that your leaving is a traumatic event. Simply walk out the door. Ensure that your dog has plenty of activities to do while you are gone, and has access to their items of comfort, such as a blanket or dog appropriate stuffed toy.

Ensure that your return to your puppy is cheerful, if your dog senses that you are in a bad emotional state when you return, they may associate it with your leaving. Make sure your dog knows what to expect when you return and create a routine, such as greeting the dog and going for a walk.

House breaking can be an overwhelming task. Some dogs seem to naturally want to relieve themselves outside, some never do. From personal experience, I know this to be true. I have two dogs, an Australian shepherd, and a Miniature pincher.

The Australian shepherd always asks to go out. I honestly can’t remember the last accident she had in the house. It was probably my own fault too. We hung a bell on the back door that over time we trained her to ring when she wanted to go out. Chances are I got to busy with something else and ignored her frantic bell ringing. Then she couldn’t hold it any longer and there was a puddle by the door.

With easily trainable, intelligent dogs like my Aussie housebreaking is a breeze. Simply take her out every few hours, praise her when she does her business and in no time, she starts asking to go out. Other dogs, like the Miniature Pincher, aren’t as easy. We took the same tract with him and he still isn’t fully broken.

I have to clean up at least three messes a week. His most nefarious accidents happen right after we come in from outside. He was too busy while we were out to actually do his business. With dogs like this you have to supervise their outdoor activities. There is frequent reminding to ‘go piddle’ which is out cue word. Some people find that laying paper down for small dogs works better then trying to train them to go outside.

If you are thinking about getting a dog, you first need to figure out how you will be able to provide for it. It takes a lot of love and care to have a dog. As most people know a good dog, is a dog that has had alot of good training.

I would say to start the dog out as a puppy because they will able to learn quicker. However you decide to train your dog, it needs to be positive. Meaning you may not beat or be really mean to your dog as they are learning. Training positively takes time and patience.I believe while training your dog it is ok to give treats as a sign of good job. You need to be able to have a lot of patience and dedication.

Remember that positive training will not be learnt over night. Just stick with it and you and you beloved dog will be a lot happier with each other.

Whatever your training goals for your dog may be, the basic commands for puppies, “sit” “stay” “lie down” and “heel” are important commands for your dog to understand, both for your comfort and the dog’s safety.

Positive reinforcement, along with your puppies natural desire to please you and engage in play, are great ways to shape your puppy’s behavior. Start with a simple command, that the dog performs naturally, such as “sit”. Clearly give the command, and gently position the puppy into a sitting position. As soon as the dog’s hindquarters hit the floor, praise the dog, while repeating the command, and give a treat.

The immediacy is important in getting your puppy to understand what behavior is rewarded. Repeat this several times until your dog begins sitting on command only, only rewarding the puppy when it completes the desired command. If your dog begins to get bored, stop. Trying to train a dog that is uninterested causes stress for both you and your puppy. Make it fun for your dog, and both of you can enjoy this time together.

Reader Story:

We have the greatest dog in the entire universe! Her name is Pepper. She is an Australian Shepherd who wandered into our lives 9 years ago, when she was an adolescent.

Pepper is smart, athletic, agreeable, and charming – just to name a few of her terrific traits. She is a de facto therapy dog who occasionally visits people in convalescent homes; she intuitively understands who wants to pet her, and is very gentle. The gentleness and quiet behavior contrast sharply with her behavior at the dog park where she loves to run, play catch, and bark. Pepper also has fun at the beach barking at the waves.

The only formal training she’s had has been “home schooling” for the AKC Good Citizen test, that she passed on the first try. Pepper is very much a “Velcro” dog – she wants to be with us at all times. Because of her we became volunteers with NorCal Aussie Rescue, a wonderful organization.

Taking the dog out for a walk is one of the best exercises for them, plus it gives your puppy a lot of stimulation. However a good walk does requires training. We had a dog who was very sweet while he was at home and would run head over heels the moment he hears that you are taking his lead and getting ready to take him for a walk outside.

He would be so enthusiastic and he would jump up high all over the place and infact jump on you also. It happened that it took a long long time for us to put this in place. There was a funny incident which happened. One day while I took him out for a walk there happened to be a cow and calf walking in the opposite side of our road. My dog got so happy and he was running and when I said no Rover, he abided but couldn’t control his feelings. He wanted to cross over to the calf and he tried jumping up. In the process I fell down on the road. He himself felt bad that I had got hurt and from then on he would never do such things.

We love him a lot but I had to be a bit strict with him to teach him to be good while he goes out for walks. He learnt it the hard way, because not only had I fallen down, but the cow came chasing him and Rover ran inside our house. He was scared and he never did make that mistake again.

My german shepherd is my best friend. As a female living alone, she has provided companionship, entertainment, and protection. My puppy is always with me, watching my every step. She has to know what I’m doing and has to have her nose in my business. I don’t know.

She has picked up many funny traits that I didn’t have to teach her. For example, she knows how to alert me that she needs to go outside. She will first put her paw on my leg and look out the window. If this doesn’t work, she’ll ring the bells I placed on my doorknob. Finally, if all else fails, she will bring me my shoes to tell me to get moving. My girl is the sweetest puppy and loves everyone, but you can’t beat the protection of a german shepherd. I know that I am safe when I walk with her.

Feeding a dog doesn’t seem like a complicated venture… Until you go to the pet food isle. With the colorful bags touting Puppy, Old Age, Active etc. It’s a wonder little fidos all over the country don’t starve to death while their owners wander the store.

There are a few basic points that you should keep in mind when feeding dogs. Number one and probably the most important. Dogs aren’t people. Most people don’t eat properly for people, and you should NOT feed your dog people food. With that said, there is a difference between people food, and food people can eat.

There is nothing wrong with feeding your dog human quality food! Many successful diets like the Raw Diet and BARF (Bones and Raw Food) include things that human could. Doing your research is the most important place to start. Don’t believe media hype, or old wives tales regarding dog nutrition. Talk to your veterinarian!

I have a male Old English Mastiff. What is known in the dog world as the giant breed. I have had other large breed dogs as that is what I tend to lean toward, such as Dobermans, Rottis, Great Danes and I loved them all but after having an English Mastiff I will never have anything else. The breeder I purchased him from suggested that even though I had experience with large breed dogs I should consider a dog training class as this breed needs to be properly trained asap. I did enroll myself and my new puppy right away – he and I both loved it. Well worth the money and the time and she was right – some things the trainer points out to you are just common sense but not something you really take the time to consider until it is pointed out to you. Such as the simple word “OK”. We use it so often everyday and because of that it is not a word that should be used as a release word or command for your dog. He will hear it and be confused if he does what you had trained him to do with that command and yet you are not even speaking to him so you don’t realize he has done whatever you have used “OK” for then starts making errors when you do give him that command at a later time.

The english mastiff is the most lovable and easy to train dog I have ever had. The Masiff is naturally an intimidating dog to many due to the size alone, mine is 16 months old and just shy of 200 lbs already, so you should never teach them to be aggressive in any way. They are naturally protective of their home and family. I had heard stories of this act showing on its own but wasn’t sure I believed it until recently. My sister in-law stopped by my home to drop something off one afternoon when noone was at home and she and my dog had spent quite a bit of time around each other so she nor I had any concerns about my dog and her being in my home in my absence. However, after she deposited the item in my kitchen my mastiff would not allow her to leave, he parked his girth in front of the door and just sat there, effectively keeping her in the house. No matter which door she went to to try and leave he would get there and block the door from opening – keeping her hostage! She finally went to the fridge and lured him away from the door with cheese – his favorite snack – and then sprinted out to freedom. He never growled, barked or snapped at her just blocked her exit and stared at her.

I have heard of people entering a house with a mastiff in an attempt to steal and then found themselves held there until the owners got home. No training necessary for this house protection! They do have a tendency to drool, snore and shed so you must be prepared for this if you want one. I keep a drool rag in each room of the house because sometimes I swear there is a spigot in there wide open the way he drools whenever the fridge opens. They are indeed a gentle breed and think that since they could fit on your lap at 2 months old they should still be able to at 200 lbs. If you have the wide open space needed and the tolerance for the drool and snoring as well as having the dog food delivered by freight then I would definitely say you should look into this breed. I absolutely love my english mastiff.

Reader Story -

We had a dog, an Alsatian named Rover. He was such a sweetheart. He came to our house while he was 20 days old we bought him from a vetinary doctor. He used to be a small bundle of joy. He hardly knew anything at that stage and the only thing he knew would be that if you banged his cup he would come near assuming that his farex is ready and he would drink it.

He would go below the sofa’s basement which would be 6 inches high. He grew a massive extent in the months to come and he became so big in about a year or so that we all used to make fun of him telling him that now his face is the size of his whole body when he first came  home.

Even though he grew big he always had an attitude that he was a still a small dog and would always come and lie down only in our laps. He still does that. He is very fond of playing with the ball and my brother and him used to play so well and  it was always he who would be winning and he would never give the ball to anyone when he got it.

He used to understand whatever we spoke about him and he would act accordingly. He was very fond of my mother and she treated him like a son also. He was very fond of papads and cannot resist the smell of frying them and would run and wait in the kitchen door entrance to get the first papad my mother fried.

Otherwise he is a good boy eating all bread and milk, Pedigree, farex, etc. which forms a part of his regular meal. We always treat him like on of our family. He was so loving and caring and he would guard our house so nicely. We all love him a lot.

I have a dog named Bo Bo. He is a mix between a chocolate labrador and a pit-bull. He is so smart, very playful and he loves his mommy. The best part about him is not just playing with him. It is watching him play by himself. He can be very comical. The funniest is when he is with his stuffed squeaky chew toys that he loves so much. But, he just doesn’t chew on them and play with them. He destroys them ripping them apart to get at those squeaky plastic things inside.

That is it. I spend ten to twenty dollars on these stuffed toys and he has it pulled apart in five minutes completely destroyed. Every time I come home with a plastic Wal-Mart or grocery bag he has to stick his nose it and smell and search hoping I brought him a new stuffed squeaky toy. He is my best friend and is always there for me when I need a good laugh.

We had an Alsatian dog in our house. He was called Rover and was such a well mannered dog. Initially we found it really very difficult to train him for the toilet training session, it was the toughest part in bringing him up because he came to our house while he was hardly 3 weeks old.

He would stand at any place he wanted and would urinate and go to toilet also at any place he wanted. Cleaning the mess up became a real difficult task, we treated him like a baby and we would put a cloth to observe the urine and then would wipe the place with detol and so on.

After a few days we taught him that he had to go to the cloth which would be placed at the same place and then urinate and he gradually got used to it. Then he started using that as his temporary toilet. Finally we started taking him out for walks and he would finish of all his motion outside and urinate also outside. He used to make a peculiar noise while he felt like going to the toilet and we would immediately leave everything and take him out and thus he got toilet trained.

Though it was a tedious process he learnt it stage by stage and we all liked him and treated him like a child in the family and he is very sweet because he learnt things at a very fast pace. We all love our dog soo…. much and enjoy keeping him with us.

Raising a labrador puppy into a full grown dog can be both very challenging and rewarding. It is important for puppies to feed off their mother’s milk for the first 6 weeks of their life but they will need to learn to start eating dog food. You may introduce your puppy to puppy food earlier than 6 weeks to ease the transition from the mother’s milk. The food should be soaked in lukewarm water so it is mushy and easy to eat.

It is important to maintain a regular feeding schedule for your puppy. Feed your puppy three times a day and try to be consistent. Offer your puppy three quarters to one cup of food and allow them about twenty minutes to finish eating before removing the remaining food. As your puppy grows, so will their appetite. Pay close attention to your puppy and it’s needs to make sure you increase its food as it needs.

Puppy training pads are a double edged sword. On one hand, the puppy has to relieve it’s self somewhere, and you would rather that happen somewhere that doesn’t involve scrubbing to clean up. On the other hand, unless you want to train the puppy to use the training pads, you are teaching something that you are going to have to reteach later on.

Basically making yourself work. There are instances that training to use a training pad is appropriate. Small dogs sometime have a difficult time asking to go outside. They have cat sized movements, and it may be worth it to you to train them to use the pads. Training pads should never be used to leave a puppy alone for long periods of time. That isn’t training that is neglect. If you choose to use training pads be aware that you may end up using pads for the life of the dog, or you will have one other thing to break the dog from.

Reader Story:

I never thought my savior would come in such a small package. I am, of course, referring to my 5 pound Papillon, named Romeo. It was Father’s Day, 2007 when I woke my husband at 4am so he could get ready for a 5 hour drive to meet the breeder and “talk” to her about her dogs. I say “talk” because I was sure in my heart that I would be bringing one of her pups home with me, but I had to promise my husband that we were just on a fact finding mission, we would just “talk” to her on this trip. Oh my husband acts like a tough guy but I knew the moment that little fella came running into the room that my husband would melt and we would be driving back with a puppy that day, and I was right. We instantly fell in love with our little Romeo.

Both my husband and I would try to beat each other home so we would be able to spend more time alone with Romeo before the other person got home. I remember one afternoon, I came home as my husband was carrying Romeo up from his kennel in our basement so Romeo could go outside, when I noticed that my husband’s breathing was labored. He was breathing so hard it was almost like he had been running. When I questioned him about his breathing he said that he didn’t think he was breathing hard, it was probably just because he was carrying Romeo that he was breathing hard. But I knew that something wasn’t right. No one should be breathing that hard just from carrying a 5 pound dog!

Within a few days we were sitting in the waiting room of the doctor’s office. My husband telling me the entire time that I was nuts, that there was nothing wrong with him. Well, as it turned out, I was right. There was something wrong. My husband had a bad mitral valve in his heart and the reason that he was breathing so hard is because the blood was not flowing properly from his lungs to his heart. We spent that entire summer of 2007 going from one doctor appointment to the next until he finally had to have surgery in September. After the surgery the doctor told us that he wanted my husband to get up and walk several times a day. That was no problem at all, I had a way to get him up off the couch walking, he was now in charge of taking care of Romeo everyday. He would take him out several times a day, and they would even go for little walks around our subdivision together. When we went back to the doctor 2 weeks after surgery, he was amazed with how fast my husband improved. It was all thanks to my little buddy Romeo, he told the doctor!

You have finished your search and brought home your new puppy. Now how do you leash train your new friend?

Training your puppy to use a leash will work best with positive rewards. Introduce your puppy to the leash by letting him see and smell the leash while you offer praise and even a small healthy treat. Start by simply hooking the leash to your dog’s collar and let him run around and play with the leash attached. Make sure to engage in positive play and praise with your dog so he will associate the leash with good things!

You can then take opportunities to tie the leash to your belt loop and encourage your puppy to follow you around as you move about the house or outside in the yard. This will also encourage bonding between you and your puppy, as well as help keep him out of trouble!

When my wife and I got two new Yorkshire terrier puppies, we were delighted with them, and we were also clueless. At first we fed them moist food, which they loved, but then we quickly changed to dry kibble food after reading that moist food is high in fat, and potentially harmful. This was not an easy transition for the puppies, they had already been spoiled by the expensive moist food, so when it came time to feed them the dry food, they were very displeased. For a whole day they avoided the dry food; they didn’t eat it, they didn’t walk by it, and they didn’t even look at it.

The next day they tried the dry food one pebble at a time, and they hated it. Obviously, we didn’t want them to starve, so we looked up puppy feeding guides on the internet, to try to get the puppies to eat. One guide suggested mixing the old food with the new food, and then slowly taking out the old food in small bits, until, finally, at the end of a week or-so, there is no old food left. We tried this, and it worked great. The puppies recognized the old food in the mix and started to eat the new food along with the old. Before long, they were both eating the new food without complaint. Also, on several other occasions we were tempted to feed the puppies scraps from the table, don’t do this! Even if they give you their famous puppy-eyes (and they will), don’t fall for it. Human food can be very bad for dogs, and especially puppies. Even though the puppy may be disdainful of it, the dog food at your local supermarket is formulated to meet the puppy’s needs. Just be sure to get advice from your vet as to what brand is right for your dog. Some of the cheaper brands of dog food are rather poor quality.

Reader Story:

I rescued Aidan, my two year old from a local rescue shelter here in Georgia. I had been searching for a dog for several months, and each attempt was unsuccessful. I decided I wanted to rescue a dog verses purchase one from the pet store this time around, as I really felt like the shelter dogs were in more need.

I must have walked around the shelter for an hour or so before I laid eyes on Aidan. The moment our eyes met, I just knew he was the right dog. Aidan is one of the sweetest dogs I could have ever asked for. He loves to cuddle and he is really is just 12 pounds of love. He loves to jump and he actually stands up on his hind legs to give me hugs everyday. I am truly happy to have found a companion who is full of so much love and affection.

Reader Story:

We have been owned for the past seven and a half years by a Queensland Heeler cross named “Jo the Wonder Nanny Dog”. Jo is probably the best dog I have ever had the joy of spending time with, and she richly deserves her title of the Wonder Nanny Dog. She is never more than ten feet away from me, unless of course, I am out with the horse. Which is hilarious, as Heelers are known for herding large animals. Not Jo. She spots that horse coming anywhere near her personal space and she hauls butt to the porch where he can not reach her.

Jo apparently loves our sons, and will often curl up on the floor with our four year old, allowing him to use her as a pillow as he watches the occasional television program. Jo takes it on herself to check on the boys as they play, and reports back to me if all is well. I always know if the boys are up to something, because Jo will get a worried look on her face, and she’ll roll her eyes towards the kids as if telling me to go and see what her charges are up to. Good ol’ Jo, seventy five pounds of furry adoration and love, we sure have been blessed with her!

The first step in housetraining your puppy is to put it on a schedule. The schedule should stay very constant with regards to going to bed at night and getting up in the morning as well as the feeding schedule. You also need to remember that a puppy needs to relieve itself very frequently. Make sure the first thing you do in the morning is take your puppy outside and praise it when it relieves itself. You can then bring the puppy inside and feed it and then once again take it outside about 20 minutes after eating. Again, use lots of praise when it relieves itself outside and not in your home. You should be using positive reinforcement constantly.

With a young puppy don’t punish them for not remembering to go outside. A puppy is like a baby and doesn’t yet have the ability to give you much notice before it has to relieve itself. Puppies will usually need to go outside about once every hour when they are young, also as soon as they wake up put them outside. Remember to praise them lavishly to reward the proper behavior and ignore the inappropriate behavior when they are young. Keep your puppy confined to small areas when they are in the process of being house trained. You can gradually increase the area when you have more confidence in their behavior.

The use of hand signals in training dogs, is an important accompaniment to the use of voice signals. Voice signals are of course extremely useful when training deaf and hard of hearing dogs, but also useful when training other dogs.

If the dog is a distance away, for example when being required to return to its handler, a hand signal may be much more practical and easier for the dog to understand. Some trainers believe that by combining the visual with the verbal the dogs ability for learning is increased, as it is being kept stimulated and is receiving a wider range of information.

Of course it is important, as with voice commands, that hand signals are consistent, so that the dog receives clear information and can commit the signal to memory and recall it for next the time. As dogs are often very attentive creatures they can often pick up on the smallest change in a signal.

Reader Story -

My dog started his life with me as a rescue. When I picked him up, he was still drugged from neutering. The people who had him thought they could get rid of him easier that way. If I didn’t take him, he was going to the pound.

He woke up in a strange house with strange people and was a little scared. He’s just a little thing, a bit bigger than a dachshund, with a curly flag tail and a Chihuahua face. They had him in a yard with a bunch of rowdy pitbulls, none of which had any training. They didn’t tell me he wasn’t housebroken at two years old. But it only took a couple days to let him know he was safe now, and I wouldn’t beat him for having an accident. Someone had, and it was quite obvious. But he was very easy to train with a little love and compassion, and quickly became my loyal friend and shadow.

Several months later, my son brought home a new kitten. Such a sweet little thing, who instantly ran toward my black cat who looked just like his mama. In a terrible conjunction of events, the cat slapped the baby kitty and clawed his eye out with one dire swipe. Of course, he then wanted nothing to do with any of the other cats that make their home with us. He wouldn’t let anyone touch him or console him, but he found my dog. My male dog.

Kitty decided it was a safe place and cuddled up to him, and started trying to nurse on the dog’s chest. After giving me and then the kitty strange look, he started bathing the baby! The dog was the only creature kitty would cuddle with, and he ‘nursed’ on the dog for months. The poor, confused dog never snapped and rarely growled, and mothered that baby cat until he was grown and beyond. They were never far apart and slept together every night. Years have passed and my dog is old and gray, deaf and almost blind. The kitty took a long time but finally came around and is very lovey and sweet, most of the time. To this day they still sleep together on my bed almost every night, the kitty climbing right on top of the dog and snuggling in. I always thought it was Brodie’s way of paying back his rescue, by rescuing the injured kitty.
